Taffys has existed for generations. An American invented chewy candy made out by stretching and pulling a sticky mass of a soft candy base, made of boiled sugar, butter, vegetable oil, flavorings, and colorings, until it becomes aerated, resulting in a light, fluffy and chewy candy. Everyone loved this candy and with the introduction of Laffy Taffy, there were more reasons to like it.
Laffy Taffy was introduced to the world in the 1970s, produced by an Illinois based company called Kathryn Beich Candies. Founded by Paul F.Beich in 1893, the company was selling a Beich Whiz bar, a chocolate-covered marshmallow candy that was very popular at that time and with Its nutritional value these bars were given to soldiers and astronauts.
Paul made Bloomington-Made Candy Known Internationally as well as locally making Bloomington the Candy Center of the world. Today, an assortment of sweets that are made in Bloomington cross oceans. These include fine chocolates, peanut brittle, candies and nuts.Golden Crumbles‚ Laffy Taffy‚ Katydids ” chocolate bars and many more treats have been produced locally ever since. The company was sold to Nestlé in 1984 and the name was changed to Kathryn Beich Inc. In 2018 Nestle sold its U.S. confectionery brands, including Laffy Taffy, to Italian chocolatier Ferrero SpA, who was famous for their choco hazel spread Nutella and now Laffy Taffy is under the umbrella of Ferrara Candy Company.
At the time Berch introduced Laffy Taffy, it was originally called Beich’s Caramels, the name came from the flavor in the middle, such as “Beich’s Banana Caramels”. But these candies were not caramel but squire taffy with fruit flavors. Later the company changed this name to “Beich’s Laffy Taffy. Advertised originally as a candy with a long lasting flavor and candy came in thick, square shaped pieces. Later Ferero changed the name to Laffy Taffy and shape into a thinner and rectangular shape and each piece is wrapped individually.

This chewy Sticky candy varies its wrapper style between having stripes and no stripes depending on the flavor. Flavors like Cherry and Banana do not have any stripes and come in a solid color background while the other flavors such as Blue Raspberry, Strawberry and Grape flavors have stripes on their wrappers and usually represent the flavor from a color,such as purple for the grape flavor. Laffy Taffy always has their name “Laffy Taffy” in slanted bold letters which is their logo also in the center of the packaging art.
